Take your animal painting skills further in my latest lesson I’ll Lift You Up. In this lesson you’ll learn how to use simple color mixtures, and quicker, more direct brush strokes to create a realistic look. Sometimes less is more. You’d be surprised at how effective a good composition and color combination can work. With this lesson you’ll create a composition that tells a story, as well as captures the viewers attention. When you create something like this fewer details end up being more effective.

Rather than spending hours and hours using a liner brush to create every little hair and nuance, we will use larger brushes for most of the painting. This forces you to suggest things with directional brush strokes, rather than over detailing every portion of the horse. You can create a realistic painting faster than you might think. Sometimes the best paintings are the ones that are loose and direct. Spending large amounts of time painting individual hairs, sometimes, can make a painting look a little too stale and overthought.

In this lesson I will provide you my loose sketch with the grid method that you can copy, or transfer to the canvas. For those needing help on how to do the grid method, please email me and I will assist you through it (tim@timgagnon.com).
