Realistic Female Cardinal Acrylic Painting Lesson

Learn how to paint a beautiful, realistic female cardinal from start to finish in this step by step acrylic painting lesson.
In this lesson, I’ll walk you through the entire painting process, beginning with getting an accurate drawing onto your canvas. We’ll use the grid method to establish the cardinal’s proportions, and a gridded reference photo is included with the lesson to make the drawing process easier.
From there, we’ll build the bird gradually through layers of color and detail. You’ll learn how to create the soft, layered appearance of feathers without trying to paint every individual feather. We’ll also spend time on some of the most important details, including creating a realistic eye and beak, adding subtle color changes, and using highlights and shadows to give the cardinal dimension and life.
You’ll also learn how I use negative space to create the soft, interesting background. Rather than painting every branch and tree individually, we’ll use simple shapes, values, and overlapping forms to suggest a winter woodland while keeping the cardinal as the focal point.
